The Law of Shadow Agendas – Every agenda hides another.
John once presented data that contradicted a plan.
The room went quiet. Mr. Bully called it “interesting.”
The Boss said, “Let’s take it offline.”
The Diplomat thanked him for “raising important considerations.”
The Strategist smiled — the kind of smile that already knew the ending.
The meeting ended with a consensus. The plan moved forward unchanged.
Three days later, John learned the decision had been made a week earlier.
From The Footnote Archives
- In one strategy workshop, the loudest voice already had the decision.
- A “cross-functional” meeting ended with only one function gaining ground.
- Minutes captured words, not motives.
- By the time John noticed, the alignment had been pre-approved elsewhere.

Let’s make sure we’re on the same page before the group discussion. I think we both know where this needs to land.
Reply, The Strategist:
“Agreed. I’ll tee it up so the conversation feels collaborative.”
Meeting invite, sent two hours later:
“Strategy Brainstorm — All Voices Welcome.”
Teams (private chat, post-meeting):
The Strategist: “Went exactly as planned. John’s objections were noted but didn’t derail anything.”
Mr. Bully: “He still thinks these sessions matter. ”
Johnny archived the exchange under Predictable Outcomes — Volume 9 and wrote:
The loudest transparency hides the deepest motive.

Disclaimer: The Footnote is a satire — an observation, not an accusation. If it feels uncomfortably accurate, that’s just coincidence. You’re simply not important enough to be targeted.
