As I went through the archives, I noticed I had scribbled something else alongside the absurdities.

To John, resilience was not strength, nor was perseverance an attitude he carried. These were simply conditions already present in him. His endurance was shaped by the environment.

It did not form in isolation. It took shape in imperfect systems. Where outcomes still had to be delivered. Where people continued to work with what existed.

Not unbothered by what the system threw at him.
Not untouched by it.
But without losing himself to it.

He seemed to accept certain truths.
That the system has blind spots.
That most people around him were trying to do a good job.
That he had a choice

He could laugh at it, become inefficient, and eventually fail to deliver.
Or he could endure and carry on.

He chose the latter.
That choice I had noted.
Deliberate.
Repeated.

And so I began to decipher something else.
Not the absurdities John endured.
But the truths he had accepted.

And how, through all of it, John continued to be the dependable one.

P.S. John, Johnny, and The Footnote don’t exist — they’re metaphors for the dependable ones who do.
The ones who endure the noise, ignore the nonsense, and keep the record honest.
