Law of Calendar Tyranny – Whoever books, rules it.
Time, in organisations, is yours in theory.
In practice, it is scheduled.
From the Footnote Archives:
- John watched his week disappear one invite at a time.
- Meetings appeared overnight.
- No agenda.
- No objective.
- Presence mandatory.
The Boss called it ensuring alignment.
The Diplomat called it fostering collaboration.
The Strategist named it strategic cadence.
Declining signaled disengagement.
Questioning signaled resistance.
Attending silently counted as buy-in.
The Busy One booked relentlessly and spoke rarely.
The Vanisher accepted everything and attended nothing.
The New Joiner joined every call and learned quickly which ones produced nothing.
John had once blocked two hours for deep work.
It was replaced by 4:00 PM the same day: “Quick Sync.”
Duration: 60 minutes.
Agenda: TBD.
Optional attendance: No.
System notification appended to the invite: “Declining may impact visibility and alignment.”
Margin note found in John’s calendar:
“Availability was mistaken for consent.”
The Survivor adapted and accepted all invites, worked after hours.
The Lone Wolf declined twice and became “not a team player.”
The Burnt-Out Star stayed quiet in meetings.
Worked late to make up for it, and eventually stopped checking the calendar altogether.
The following quarter, John’s performance review noted:
“Could benefit from more proactive engagement in cross-functional forums.”
He had attended 47.
Johnny turned the page and wrote:
The first invite decides everything that follows.
Johnny’s Footnotes is a satirical instrument, infused with humour, for understanding organisational dysfunction, grounded in The Anatomy of Nonsense, also known as the Grand Unified Theory of Bullshit, finally documented so you no longer have to pretend it isn’t happening.
Meet John’s Colleagues. They are here (& almost everywhere).
Disclaimer: The Footnote is a satire — an observation, not an accusation. If it feels uncomfortably accurate, that’s just coincidence. You’re simply not important enough to be targeted.
